Data reveal how remote workers are leaving the cities since the pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic made remote workers reshuffle their travel destinations, new data reveal. Spain and Portugal are the new top-scorers, while major metropolitan cities, such as London and New York, have lost their attraction.

The data collected by our journalism team clearly show a drastic increase in preferences for warmer countries – and a fatigue of big city life. Besides Mediterranean countries, Latin American destinations, such as Buenos Aires and the small coastal city Playa del Carmen in Mexico, have reaped the fruits of the pandemic with a sharp increase of arrivals.

Jordan Goldmeier is one of many people to exploit the opporutnities that remote work brings. After living in NYC for six years, Jordan Goldmeier took his career as a data scientist to a different level and moved to Lisbon in August 2022, after Covid-19 hit. “I felt stuck in New York City. Once things were safer, I resolved to give it a shot myself”.

The pandemic accelerated a trend that had begun to take effect before its outbreak in 2020. But the pandemic has caused applications to remote work positions on LinkedIn to skyrocket, and the number of applications exceed the number of offers. Company executives’ preference for office work is holding back the trend, but the strong preference will likely have an impact on the future of work as companies compete for the most talented workers.

Hundreds of people scammed by network of fake apartment rental websites

A company based in New Mexico (USA) behind websites that use the same scamming strategy in Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, UK, Austria and Australia.

Despite seventy-three reports, these fraudulent businesses still continue operating in defiance of the Swedish Price Information Law requirements to clearly and correctly state prices.

“After I found out about the 148 euros that were taken out of my card, I was writing emails to them, calling them, etc. The phone number was not real and nobody replied to my messages”, a victim reported in an interview.

Scammers are thriving in a housing market crisis in Western Europe that has been lasting for decades and deteriorates as years go by. A survey we conducted in Sweden showed that out of all the respondents who think that they had been approached by scammers, 7% were successfully scammed but none reported it to the police.
